1. Explain the cultural diversity of the United States, as seen through Deja's eyes in Manhattan, New York.
2. Referring to pages 28 and 32, explain the built landscape that transcends into a cultural landscape for the United States.
3. Beginning on page 39, explain how "home" defines a person. Identify the term "home" in the figurative meaning.
4. Referring to page 42, explain the immigration trend of the United States of America. Evaluate the causes/reasons for the migration trend.
5. Referring to pages 63-64, evaluate the larger narrative of the story that the author discusses about diversity. Explain how this reflects America's culture.
6. Referring to page 67, explain the forces that unite the American people under one nation. Is this sense of nationalism strong or weak in the United States. Explain your answer. Explain how/ if possible people from diverse backgrounds and culture can unite together.
7. Answer the question posed on page 84, "what are the differences between America's far past and recent past?" Use your previous knowledge from last year's 8th grade U.S. History class to what you know about America's modern past (last 50-100 years)
8. Referring to page 89, explain why these events stand out in America's history. Explain which events in your lifetime stand out in your memory, and justify why this is. Explain the connection between history and memory.
9. Referring to the quote on page 90, "a better life", explain what a "better life" looks like in the United States. Compare your answer with your neighbors. Explain the similarities and differences you see between your answers. Explain the reason for this.
10. Referring to the quote on page 91, "But America's ideals remain strong or adapt and get stronger," explain what this quote means to you.
11. Even though you were not born before September 11, 2001, why is this date, event, and tragedy important to your specific life?
12. At the beginning of the year, I stated that we would become more aware about cultures and global events. Referring to page 111, explain how multilingual skills affect cultural awareness. Explain how your Spanish/French class is better preparing you for our modern, globalized business world and society.
